Bar Mitzvah – literally, “Son of the Commandment” (or “one to whom the commandments apply”) is an important coming-of-age ceremony for young men that signifies taking responsibility for their own spiritual life. It was easy to see that Andrew was well-prepared for this life transition – both in his handling of a very lengthy Hebrew reading from the Torah scroll, and his insights of the scripture which he delivered flawlessly.

The one thing I love about returning to Golden Gardens is that the tunnel is never the same place twice. Graffiti goes up – the walls get re-painted – and the cycle gets set in motion once again. So this morning’s trip to the park yielded a surprise with the entire tunnel decorated with the work of various young artists. It almost looked like a children’s art class took a field trip there. The best part was the motto we found on the edge of the wall – just perfect for a high school senior photo shoot.

Brennan has incredibly intense blue eyes…I love how the tunnel emphasizes their coolness. Just sayin’.

Tonight is the opening night for Core Theatrics presentation of Godspell, taking place at the fabulous Northshore Perfoming Arts Center in Bothell. Having worked with Marianni, I know the level of dedication she and all her young actors have put into this show. The level of talent is quite amazing! It’s always cool when I get to see the young actors I’ve taken headshots for perform on stage. Connor is a young actor I photographed a few months ago, and now he is staring in Core Theatrics production of ‘Romeo and Juliet.’ Hmmm…now that I think of it, I have photographed the headshots for at least seven of the cast members – Connor was just the most recent. Wow!

Yesterday, Alyssa and I were invited to photograph the final dress rehearsal before opening tonight. I look forward to going back this evening and enjoying the whole performance without camera in hand. If it’s anything like what we witnessed already, the show is going to be brilliant!

Beds on the beach. Live music streaming through the air. People rising from the beds to greet the setting sun. These were the sights and sounds that greeted us Friday evening, when we met up with Lindsey for her senior pictures at Golden Gardens Park. It was intriguing, but for the life of me I could not put the pieces together. Thank goodness for the internet! What ever did we do without it? I learned that we had witnessed the blocking of a theatrical event which took place on Sunday, a piece called “Lullaby Moon“. Maybe if I had done my reasearch a little sooner, we could have made the show. Actually, what I really wanted to do was to use one of the beds for a prop during our photo session. I think one day I will do just that.

This is the third year that we’ve been able to be a part of the fabulous theater productions directed by Marianni Magnusson. I had no idea what we were getting into a few years ago…if I had, we would have started long ago. Marianni works on a three-year rotation with Alyssa’s drama group, so that the kids are exposed to a variety of genres during their high school years. We began with the musical “Les Mis”; moved onto Shakespeare in “A Midsummer Night’s Dream”; and this year it was the dramatic selection of “The Three Musketeers”. Finding the right scripts for the group is so challenging, and I am amazed year-after-year by Marianni’s abilities to pull off such a undertaking with flair and finesse.

Alyssa has long been amused by the idea of ninja warriors – I think she just joined their ranks. Every time I see these images, I hear her voice shouting, “Fight me! Fight me!” Too bad we didn’t think to count her hang time – those were quite the moves!

John played the role of d’Artagnan, a young boy of 20 who falls in love…and falls in love…and falls in love for the first – third times. He did a great job!

This last image was one of my favorites from the show. Melanie played the role of Constance. Her ability to emote with just her face was incredible.

For twenty-five years, Conductor Gerry Jon Marsh has given of himself to the Cascade Youth Symphony Orchestra…given of his time, given of his talent, given of his passion to train and raise up young musicians with a life-long love of creating and enjoying music. And he’s succeeded! Now more than 200 members strong, his young musicians have developed their musical skills and self-confidence under his guidance, presenting outstanding performances and competing (and placing!) at the State level.

To honor Conductor Marsh on his 25th anniversary, a surprise was planned to have Conductor Gerard Schwarz, Musical Director of the Seattle Symphony, present him with honor and recognition of his years of service to the Cascade Youth Symphony Orchestra. However, with Conductor Schwarz stuck in Seattle traffic just minutes before he was set to go on stage, it seemed that the surprise was going to be thwarted. With impeccable timing, Conductor Schwarz made it to the stage just as planned, to the delight of the organizers, staff, students and parents.
