Over Memorial Day we could have gone on a camping trip with friends, but Gabriel and I opted out of that invitation for one just a little more appealing – a spontaneous getaway to the city of Portland with our new college graduate, Ashley. I can still be spontaneous, as long as I have a little time to plan!

Ashley’s goal was to visit her dream store – Powell’s Books, that boasts an inventory of a million books housed in a store that covers one city block. Yes, that smile on her face is real!

Of course, to insure that she spent as much time as she liked at this new hot spot, Ashley made certain that our hotel was right around the corner. She did a superb job, as she found the most pet-friendly place I’ve ever visited: The Mark Spencer Hotel. Not just pet-friendly, they had entire suites set aside for guests traveling with their four-legged friends. Madeline was given the special treatment as well, as shown on the visitor board at the front desk. We were welcomed in style and would definitely recommend this hotel to others!

Thankfully the time we were there was beautiful and dry…

Last week, we skipped Madeline’s photo session – she just wasn’t growing that fast (or so I thought). Two weeks from the last check-in, you can really start to see the difference! Here she is at 14 weeks.

So they say puppies grow fast…but I’m having a hard time seeing the difference in just one week with our little Coton de Tulear. I don’t mind, though – just doing these session with her is so much fun! Here she is at 11 weeks…

I couldn’t resist adding this last one – here is Madeline with her best “Joker” impersonation. Too funny!

It’s been said that puppies grow fast and change very quickly – what better way to test out this theory than to photograph our new little Coton de Tulear puppy Madeline weekly and see for ourselves. Besides, she’s just so cute it gives me a reason to share her cuteness with the world.

And lest anyone think that photographing all this cuteness was an easy task, let me assure you that it took the help of a puppy wrangler (my husband, Gabriel) and plenty of treats – but the results were so worth the effort.

This is our nine-week-old Coton de Tulear puppy, Madeline. She’s such a sweet dog. Her first night home, I volunteered for night-duty, and wasn’t quite prepared for getting up every two hours with her. It was like clock-work! The following morning I learned from my breeder that Madeline had me wrapped around her umm…paw, as she was more than capable of sleeping through the night without a problem. With that knowledge, I ignored her attempts to get my attention the following night (were there any attempts? I was sleeping so well I really don’t know!). She’s been perfect in the night ever since. Here are her first pictures with us in her new home.

When our golden retriever died a year and a half ago, I seriously thought it would be my last dog…probably because that’s what Gabriel kept telling me. Anushka was a big part of our lives, and I could never think of replacing her. Fast forward to the present, and isn’t it great how things can change! After babysitting our friend’s dog for a week, Gabriel had a change of heart and realized that our home – and our lives – were ready for another canine companion.

So the search began. I agreed to consider a smaller breed dog (gone was the fantasy of having an Old English Sheepdog), and after diligent searching, a rare breed I’d never heard of kept coming to the forefront: the Coton de Tulear. After visiting with a local breeder, spending time with the dogs, and seeing their happy and friendly disposition (a must!), we all agreed we’d found the breed we were looking for.

In just one week Madeline will be part of our family – we can’t wait!

I once brought home the cutest puppy. I found her sitting on the lap of a girl who was riding my school bus, and she was being given away. Cool! She went with me to classes that day, and home with me at night. My dad didn’t think she was so cute, though, and I was instructed to promptly give her back. There was just one glitch – I didn’t know the girl who had given me the dog, and I had brought her home on a Friday night – before Spring break. So the puppy lived in our home and for the next seven days, she found her way into each of our hearts. When school resumed, the dog was mine!

I’m remembering that story quite vividly today, because this past week, we had another week-long visitor in our home: a small rat-terrier named Patches. His owners needed a place for him to stay while they jetted off to the Hawaiian sun, and we seemed to be the best match to take care of their lovable (yet neurotic) dog. The strangest thing happened during the week he was here: Gabriel started to enjoy having a dog around the house again! (right, honey?) And…he even started looking into what breed of dog would be best for our family. 16 months after losing our golden retriever Anushka, it’s a welcome thought to be actively looking for another pup to fill our home with life.

So thanks, Patches…you did your job well!
