  • I once heard it said that "...our achievements grow according to the size of our dreams and the degree to which we are aware of our destiny." I like that…a lot. Five years ago my dreams were small - but as time has gone on, and the awareness of my destiny continues to unfold before me, my dreams are beginning to soar!

I am not just a photographer – consider me a friend who is here to create motivation and opportunity for you to express your life to the fullest with those you love; moments caught to remember and celebrate.

Life tells every story…once. Let me help you to start telling your story today!

the passing of a friend. ~lorraine marie, family photographer

Yesterday I spent the day processing photographs, preparing for teaching my digital photography class, meeting with clients, sampling the best toffee in the world, hanging out with Ashley and Alyssa in Seattle on one of the coldest and windiest days of the year (note to self:  check the weather forecast before attempting to photograph a headshot session in Seattle!), and doing my best to live life to the fullest.  Yet while I was consumed with the realities of daily living, a friend of mine quietly passed from this life to the next.

Cynthia was a woman unlike any other I’ve ever met – caring, compassionate, thoughtful, artistic, poetic, giving, nurturing, and a blessing to know.  She gave so much to her family, to her community, and to all who came into contact with her.  We often spoke about photography – she, an artist who saw beauty all around her, would talk to me of the photographs that meant so much to her through the years, and those she still wanted to create.

I wish that I had a beautiful image of Cynthia to share with the world, but as is all too common (we moms are our own worst critics and often the last to be seen in family photographs), I have none – just images I created of her children, which I am glad to know she treasured.

So I leave this in tribute to Cynthia – a woman who knew how to express in words what so many of us fail to see, a woman who felt deeply and connected to those around her, a woman whose legacy will long be remembered.  God Bless You, Cynthia, and your family and friends who will always hold the memory of you close to their hearts.

natasha’s bat mitzvah. ~lorraine marie, family photographer in seattle

Celebrating a young person’s Bar or Bat Mitzvah is so much more than a coming-of-age ritual – it is truly a community event, recognizing the passage from childhood into adulthood as the young person is welcomed into the life of the community.  Add to that the love and support of family and friends, and you have all the makings of a life-affirming event – how great is that?!  Natasha was blessed to be surrounded by family – so much family! – friends, and community as she celebrated her Bat Mitzvah.

The Torah processional and reading from the Torah in Hebrew…

I love this image of Natasha carrying the Torah through the Sanctuary.  The woman showing such enthusiasm is Natasha’s great-grandmother – what an awesome memory to have!

sheri braunstein - Thank you for the beautiful pictures. What a blessing to have you capture this most meaningful event. You are the best at what you do!

Bonnie Bristow - Lorraine, Thank you! I was so sorry to have missed this event, but am so thankful for the wonderful pictures you took and shared on this blog. I seriously almost cried at seeing them. I wish I could have been there and am thankful to have seen the emotion, and beauty of the day through your pictures. You have such a gift!

Lorraine Marie - Sheri, I wouldn’t have missed this for anything! Bonnie, I’m sorry you couldn’t be there, but I’m glad that the photos helped to convey part of the spirit and beauty of Natasha’s day. I guess the next-best-thing to being there. :)

autumn. ~lorraine marie, family portrait photographer in seattle

So here it is – fall is in full swing, and I have been SO delinquent in keeping my blog up-to-date. How embarrassing! If you follow me on Facebook (and I’d love to see you there!), you’ll already know that I’ve done a better job of keeping things current over there. I plan to catch up on all the weddings, senior and family sessions that have been keeping us so busy this fall, but to start off, I wanted to share some photographs of family life: my husband, Gabriel, daughters Ashley and Alyssa, and our 1-year-old Coton named Madeline. Here’s how we’ve been celebrating this awesome fall in the Northwest – how about you?

Starting off with a walk around the neighborhood block with Ashley, Alyssa and Madeline…

Yes, she does love being with us and yes, she IS wearing a harness and yes, she will enjoy walks with us one day!

Madeline won this battle.  She is the most human-like dog I’ve ever known.

To celebrate our 24th wedding anniversary, Gabriel and I slipped away for a romantic getaway to Leavenworth.:-)

Yes, I do bring my camera with me on trips, and couldn’t resist taking a few shots of the wedding that was taking place in the center of town.

We stayed at an incredible inn called “Mountain Springs Lodge“.  I highly recommend this place for anyone looking for a romantic getaway, a restful retreat, a place to feel truly pampered.

The Northwest Territory Suite was the best!

Trying to walk in the footsteps of my parents, who both have taken their love for nature photography to a new level.  I usually concentrate on photographs with faces, but this was so beautiful, I couldn’t resist.

shanan - Beautiful! Our Creator Loves us so!!!!

A Mom’s Perspective. ~lorraine marie, portrait photography in seattle

Linda-Jo: A Mom’s Testimonial from Lorraine Varela on Vimeo.

We’ve been receiving feedback from seniors regarding their photo sessions, but this is the first time we have a mom sharing her perspective on the senior experience. Whether it’s your first child reaching this milestone or your last, it’s so sweet to see that the impact can be just as touching.

Call Lorraine today to schedule your own portrait session – family or high school senior – and mention you saw Linda-Jo’s testimonial to receive a special pricing discount. 206-930-1333. We look forward to giving you the same awesome experience that Linda-Jo enjoyed!

angie and tyler – married! ~lorraine marie, wedding photography in seattle

It’s always a special honor to be invited to photograph a wedding, and even more so when there is a long-lasting connection to the couple.  Gabriel and I were honored to photograph Angie and her husband Tyler this weekend.  We’ve known Angie’s family long before she was born, and watched her grow from the most beautiful toddler I’ve ever seen into the most beautiful bride.  Their day was filled with so much color, laughter, joy, friendship and love, and it was so sweet to share in that time with them.

Alyssa captured this beautiful portrait of Angie while we were upstairs in the master bedroom for window light shots.  I love it!

Another shout-out to Alyssa’s creative eye on the shoe-shot below.  Good job!

Just one of the many benefits of working as a team at weddings.  While I was capturing the full group jumping shot, Gabriel was able to get in close for some great expression shots of the bride and groom.  Fun!

Tyler and Angie, blessings to you both on your new lives together.  May your marriage be filled with much joy, happiness, laughter, friendship and love.  Congratulations!
